Parks Commission of Monterey
Minutes from April 9, 2009
Members in attendance:
Leroy Thorpe, chair, Valerie Zantay, Dianna Piepho and Bridget Krans
1. Rink.
- Bridget reported that she purchased two gift certificates from the
- General Store for Mark Makuc and Steve Graves for the work they did making ice this year.
- This Sat at 10am we will be dismantling the rink. Volunteers are needed and emails are being sent out. Valerie will pick up doughnuts and coffee for the crew.
2. Diana reported on “Jamie’s Court”. Diana attended a select board meeting with a member of the group raising money for “Jamie’s Court”. The group has raised $12,000.00 for a basketball court to be build at Green Park The select board told them that they need a design proposal for drainage etc. The group will do an engineering plan and will then need to go to the conservation committee and obtain building permits. The plan is for a 40 x 60 court and they will use our hoops at first, but later replace them. Leroy brought up the question of whether or not they will need a town warrant.
3. Diana also reported that the select board requested a shed for rakes and supplies out on the ball field.
4. Diana will be calling Gary to fix the hoop which is missing a bolt.
5. Beach
- Bridget will be placing an ad for life guards in the Shoppers Guide this month.
- We discussed our policy for swim classes and decided that a pre registration should take place and the cost should be $5.00 per child and no more than $10.00 per family.
- We discussed and dismissed charging for non-residents to use the beach. However, Bridget will ask Jon Sylbert to require school or camp groups that use the beach as part of their programs to have adults in the water with the children at a ratio of 1-10. They should also be required to use the beach in the morning when it is not as busy.

- Purchase of a sandwich board for Park Commission Activities
- Changing room at beach
- Life guard schedules, beach opening, and swim lessons.
- Phone issue at beach
- Fixing window in warming room at rink
- Beach night? Grill? Grill at park?
- Purchase of AED for beach
- Calendar
- Dog park
We thank and salute Leroy Thorpe for his dedication to the town and for the years he served as chair of this committee, and we congratulate Bridget Krans as she takes over the chair.
